READ: Psalm 23:4-6
REFLECT: Psalm 23:4 says Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (NIV)
During the summer months, the best shepherds will bring their sheep up to graze on the untouched pastures of the mountain tops. Mountains generally have valleys and gulches that run up the sides. Shepherds know that the best way to get sheep to the top of a mountain is through the valleys. The paths of righteousness that we follow God along sometimes go through valleys of “the shadow of death.”
Living a life pleasing to God is the best life to live. Following Jesus Christ may not always keep us out of harm’s way or prevent us from facing despairing situations. However, with Jesus as our shepherd, there is no need to fear the uncertainties of life. God provides for us and protects us. God will always be with us. For this we praise Him!
